In August of 2009 I was contacted to design a gift for the Commandant of the US Marine Corps. He was going to attend the birthday ball with the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune. This was to be a special honor for the II MEF and they wanted to present him with something memorable and unique. The theme for the ball was traditional USMC.
I thought back to my childhood as I played in the Marine uniforms of my father. I remembered the flat black Eagle Globe and Anchor on each collar. It was from that recollection that I created my design. I wanted to design something new and yet reflective of the classic Eagle Globe and Anchor. So I decided to make the relief come from multiple, flat layers of flat steel, each smaller than the last thus creating the slopes and curves of the emblem. Each layer was separated from the last with a spacer to make the entire relief over 2 inches. The flat black color came from those same memories.
This EGA* is 21” x 23”.
I am excited to now make this same design available for others to use in their special occasions.
